Voice- The Bodyshop with Jennifer Black and Dr. Steve is brought to you by Allegheny Chesapeake Physical Therapy.
Jennifer Black - Good evening and welcome to this weeks edition of The Body Shop. Today we will talk about golfer's elbow. Is this the same as tennis elbow?
Dr. Steve - Yes Jennifer it is similar to tennis elbow, the problem is on the opposite side of the elbow. The problem occurs in the muscle group called the wrist flexors.
This is often an overuse. The flexor muscle or tendon(s) get inflamed, leading to pain and functional disability.
This is actually easier to treat than tennis elbow. Patients with golfer's elbow get better much faster and are able to return to functioning much quicker.
It is important to determine what activities cause the symptoms. Patients must be educated to avoid these activities while healing. Golfer's elbow will respond to rest, and physical therapy. Treatment consists of manual therapy, stretching, strengthening and ice. It is important to evaluate the strength of the entire arm and strengthen all the weak muscles.
