Treatment of Carpal Tunnel

Transcript

Voice- The Bodyshop with Jennifer Black and Dr. Steve is brought to you by Allegheny Chesapeake Physical Therapy.

Jennifer Black - Tonight we are going to talk Carpal Tunnel. Dr. Steve, this is fairly common, isn't it?

Dr. Steve - Yes is it common. Most people believe they must have surgery to fix carpal tunnel but that is no longer true.

  • In carpal tunnel the nerve gets trapped in a tunnel in the hand/wrist area. When the pressure in the tunnel gets greater it causes symptoms of numbness, pain, tingling in the thumb and index finger. Activities can aggravate especially repetitive activities.
  • This should be treated nonsurgically first.
  • The good news is that we can predict your success. By a simple series of 5 tests we can predict your success with nonsurgical treatment. You should see a Occupational Therapist to have this test done if you have symptoms.
  • The treatment is simple, splinting, tendon gliding exercises, Vit B6, activity modification.
  • So if you have the symptoms now you can take a quick and painless test and know whether you're a candidate for non surgical treatment.
Jennifer Black - Thanks Dr. Steve for that information. If you have any questions for Dr. Steve or you would like your question answered by Dr. Steve on the air, contact him at www.alleghenychesapeake.com or 1-800-NEW-SELF.
