Jennifer Black - Our topic tonight is Knee pain. Dr. Steve this seems to be much more common. Is that true?
Dr. Steve - It is true, knee pain complaints are on the rise. And there are many kinds of knee pain. The type of knee pain we are going to talk about tonight is anterior knee pain, often associated the knee cap.
The group most affected by this type of pain is young females. Especially when they are developing and maturing into young women. It is thought to be an alignment problem with this group. The pain is usually worse when on stairs or hills especially going down hill or down stairs. Squatting is not comfortable, yet walking my not hurt at all. Pain that presents like this is often classified as Patello femoral syndrome. Meaning the pain is from the front of the knee and it may have many different causes. This pain requires professional help. It isn't a problem that progresses usually but it will become a chronic irritation.
Treatment is based on the balancing the knee cap to reduce pressure, and keeping it aligned. Treatment can include taping of the knee cap, strengthening of the quad muscles, and stretching of the calf and hamstrings. It may also require a brace, or foot orthotic.
Jennifer Black - So Dr. Steve the exact treatment is different for each person?
Dr. Steve - Jennifer you make a good point, the approach to each is similar but the best treatment is very individualized.
